Rather than hunting for the best holiday bargains, many families will be on the hunt for the perfect tree. For some, that may mean scavenging supermarket parking lots and other roadside tree lots. For others, finding the perfect tree means a trip into the wilds of Idaho.
For many, this is a holiday tradition — packing the car and heading into the forest with hot cocoa, snow shoes, and a backpack full of snacks. It's a nice change of pace for individuals and families to get out of the city and into nature.
The most popular place to find a tree is the Boise National Forest near Idaho City. Given its close proximity to Boise, many families venture up Highway 21 to scour the national forest for the best tree.
Permit sales for Boise National Forest began online at Recreation.gov on October 14th. Permit holders may cut and harvest trees from November 20th - December 31st. The US Forest Service sells thousands of these tree permits every year for $10 (+$2.50 online service fee). Keep in mind when you are out, it is unethical and illegal to take a tree from private property without the owners' permission.
If you are feeling more adventurous, driving further gives you some advantages. The more remote the area, the better the selection. There are also fewer people the further you go. The trees are often thicker and more appealing. Don't forget, you still have to get the tree back to the vehicle, so plan accordingly!
If you're not sure where to go, there are maps available at the Boise National Forest's website.
