Thinking about adding a new deck, fence, or shed this summer? Before you start, check to see if your project needs a permit.
In the City of Boise, you’ll need a building permit for projects that involve construction, safety, or structural changes. That includes:
- Adding anything attached to your house — like a deck, porch, patio cover, shed, or garage
- Installing a detached shed or garage that’s larger than 200 square feet
- Constructing a deck or patio more than 12 inches above the ground
- Installing a retaining wall that’s 4 feet tall or more — measured from the bottom of the footing
- Replacing your roof
- Putting up a fence taller than 6 feet in a residential area

You may also need Planning and Zoning approval, which is different from a building permit. While a building permit ensures your project meets construction and safety codes, Planning and Zoning approval focuses on what you’re allowed to build and where you’re allowed to build it. It helps make sure your project follows Boise’s zoning laws, including things like setbacks, height limits, and neighborhood design standards.
This is especially important if your property is in an Historic District. Even smaller exterior changes, such as fences, sheds, decks, siding, or window replacements, often require approval. In those cases, you’ll likely need a Certificate of Appropriateness from the city before getting started.
Other common exterior projects that might not require a building permit, but still need Planning and Zoning approval, include:
- Fences of any height
- Detached sheds that are 200 square feet or smaller
- Driveways, patios, or sidewalks more than 30 inches above the ground
Some projects may also require separate permits for electrical, plumbing, or mechanical work, especially if you’re adding outlets, lighting, or running new utilities.
If you’re unsure what permits or approvals apply to your project, it’s always best to ask. Call the City of Boise Permit Center at 208-608-7070 or visit for more information.
