Single women make up a significant and growing portion of homebuyers in the United States. Recent statistics show they accounted for 24% of all homebuyers. In fact, a much greater percentage of single women are homeowners (17-19%) as compared to single men (7-9%)!
Research indicates that single women homebuyers engage in extensive research and spend a longer time searching for homes. They are also more inclined to make home repairs, with 47% of purchases at home improvement stores made by women. Additionally, 94% of women homeowners have independently undertaken home improvement projects in the last five years — listen up contractors!
Certain home characteristics appeal to single women buyers, such as safe neighborhoods and home security technology. Home offices are also highly valued, as almost two-thirds of home-based business owners in the US are women. Other desirable features include maintenance-friendly yards, ample storage space, and abundant natural light in key areas like the kitchen and primary living space.
In order to make your home more appealing to prospective single women buyers when selling, you can:
- highlight your home’s safety features and the safety of your neighborhood
- stage a bedroom as a home office or create an office nook in your house
- ensure your yard is — or appears to be — low-maintenance
- clear out your closets and cupboards to show ample storage
- raise your blinds for showings to allow in natural light
